Teeth Contouring And Crown Lengthening
Do you have irregularly shaped teeth? Perhaps your teeth look small compared to your gums, and you just don’t like the way it looks. For minor dental imperfections, we offer teeth contouring and crown lengthening. Both procedures can help you achieve a greater sense of uniformity to your teeth, which in turn creates a more aesthetically pleasing smile.
Teeth contouring is the process of removing small amounts of tooth enamel to alter the tooth’s shape, size, or surface.
It’s an effective way to address dental imperfections such as:
- Small chips
- Bulges or other irregularities on the tooth’s surface
- Oddly shaped teeth
Crown lengthening is the process of removing a small amount of your gums to make the visible portions of your teeth appear longer. This procedure can sometimes helpful for people who feel as though they have extremely short teeth.
If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities get such perfect teeth, the answer is often dental veneers. A dental veneer is a thin yet durable piece of composite or porcelain that is custom-made to look like a healthier version of your natural tooth. Dental veneers are bonded directly to the tooth’s enamel to conceal dental imperfections such as:
- Discoloration. Dental veneers are a great option for teeth that have been discolored from the inside, as a result of certain medications or trauma. These kinds of stains can’t be removed with teeth bleaching treatments, so dental veneers are often the best solution.
- Chips and cracks. In addition to concealing chips and cracks, dental veneers have some restorative properties as well, since they support and strengthen the tooth.
- Worn down teeth. Dental veneers can be used to “reverse” the effects that bruxism, or teeth grinding, has on your smile.
- Misalignment or misshapen teeth. Dental veneers make your teeth more uniform, giving the appearance of straighter teeth without braces.
- Teeth with gaps between them. Sometimes, dental veneers are referred to as “instant orthodontics.”
At Jovan Prosthodontics, we’re proud to offer several different kinds of dental veneers, including EasySmile™ Lifelike, e.max, Lumineers®, and porcelain dental veneers.
Which kind you choose will depend on your smile goals. But generally speaking, placing a dental veneer takes two or three appointments. After your initial consultation, Dr. Ace will prepare the tooth. He’ll remove some of your enamel to accommodate the dental veneer, although it’s important to note that not all types of dental veneers require this kind of preparation.
Then, we’ll take images and impressions of your teeth, which we’ll use to create natural-looking dental veneers that blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile. You’ll come back a couple weeks later, and we’ll place the dental veneers! You’ll have a beautiful new smile you’ll be excited to show off.
Gum Reshaping and “Gummy Smile” Treatment
A gummy smile occurs when roughly four or more millimeters of gum show when you grin. The gums might look as if they’re being overpowering by the teeth.
If you have a gummy smile, we’re able to adjust the amount of gum tissue that is visible when you smile with a simple gum reshaping treatment, which Dr. Ace says is sort of like a “gum lift.” Your gums will be repositioned to essentially lift the gumline, giving you a more balanced smile!
Even if you don’t have a “gummy smile,” you may still benefit from a gum reshaping treatment. If your gumline is uneven, gum reshaping can create a more consistent look.
